The Team brings expertise in all facets of capital investing, including raising investment capital, sourcing and negotiating investments, building portfolio management teams, providing strategic guidance, Board oversight, and creating strategies to ultimately provide attractive returns to investors. The Team has worked together directly, or known each other professionally, for over 15 years. It is a cohesive, collaborative group with complementary skill sets.
Donald R. Caldwell
Don Caldwell is one of Pennsylvania’s most experienced and successful investors, having been the founder or a key principal in two of the Commonwealth’s most active investment groups, Cross Atlantic Capital Partners and Safeguard Scientifics. Don founded and serves as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Cross Atlantic Capital Partners, which has raised four investment funds totaling nearly $500 million of committed capital, and is responsible for the firm’s operations, building the investment team, and growing the Cross Atlantic franchise through fundraising, network development, and deal flow generation.
Prior to founding Cross Atlantic Capital in March 1999, Don was President and Chief Operating Officer of Safeguard Scientifics, Inc. (NYSE: SFE) where he also previously served as Executive Vice President. During Don’s tenure at Safeguard, Safeguard was highly regarded for its growth and technology management skills, investing principally in the information technology industry.
Don holds a B.S. from Babson College and an M.B.A. from the Graduate School of Business at Harvard. His civic organization roles include serving as a Director and Chairman Emeritus of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
Frederick C. Tecce
Fred Tecce is a Managing Partner and Of Counsel to the Fund. Fred will work closely with the Fund’s corporate investor base and oversee Cross Atlantic's legal efforts, including contract negotiations and intellectual property rights. Fred also assists portfolio companies with a wide variety of legal issues.
Fred has significant senior-level professional experience within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and brings a deep understanding of the institutional investor community. He was appointed by former Pennsylvania Governor Tom Ridge to serve as a member of the Board of the $50 billion Pennsylvania Public School Employee Retirement System (PSERS), and served as Chairman of the Finance Committee. Fred retired from PSERS in 2001.
Much of Fred’s professional career has been spent as a principal in a company that pioneered and licensed new technology in the textile industry. This involved managing a long-term, complex, multi-party lawsuit directed at enforcing the company's patent rights worldwide. His experience in managing complex litigation was also the basis for his engagement with two other significant businesses whose existence was threatened by lawsuit disputes.
In addition, Fred has launched several new businesses and has been an investor and active participant in several emerging growth companies. He holds a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania and J.D. from the Dickinson School of Law of Pennsylvania State University.
R. Carter Caldwell
Carter Caldwell joined Cross Atlantic in 2006 and is Cross Atlantic's representative to the Board of Directors of several portfolio companies. He is responsible for deal sourcing and due diligence, with a particular focus is spearheading new investment efforts within the SaaS and Enterprise Software, financial technology, and manufacturing/industrial technology industries. Carter brings strong technology industry experience, having founded and managed two software companies. Carter founded and served as COO of Quazant Technology, the developer of the Transaction Accelerator®, a high-speed transaction processing database. This technology responded to the needs in the Telecommunications, Financial Services, and Enterprise Resource Planning industries.
Prior to Quazant, Carter joined Acorn Systems, Inc., a software and services company that provides activity-based costing analysis. Acorn Systems was acquired by Ignite Technologies. During his time at Acorn, he served in the capacities of Director of Corporate Development, Product Manager, and Engagement Manager. While at Acorn Systems, Carter focused on the Semiconductor, Electronics, Fluid Mechanics, Chemical, Food Service, and Steel industries. Carter also previously worked at J.P. Morgan and Bear Stearns.
Carter speaks at numerous events, including those held at Villanova Law School, Temple School of Business, and the New York Venture Summit. He has served as a Steering Committee Member for the Mid-Atlantic Capital Alliance, and as a Judge for the nationally-recognized Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Competition, Wharton Business Plan Competition, Wharton Sustainable VC Investment Competition, and the Pitching Across America competitions.
Carter holds a B.A in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from the University of Pennsylvania and received his M.B.A. from the Columbia University Business School.
